This section of LensPlay deals with technical issues related to camera lenses. Currently it is focused on lenses for the Canon EOS system, but in the future it may expand to lenses for other cameras.

Within this section is the main lens database (see link on left). This contains information on many lenses (currently about 214) which are available in a Canon EOS compatible mount, plus a few special lenses which can be adapted to the Canon EOS mount. The complete current list of lenses can be found on the Lens List page. From the Database Query page the database is searchable by focal length, aperture and price and each lens in the resulting list has its own page with technical data, ratings and comments. The highest rated lenses are listed on the Top Twenty Lenses Page
Many of the lenses are given a "LensPlay" rating which is explained on the Lens Ratings page. Users can also add their own ratings from the lens data pages. In order to minimize abuse, each IP address can rate each lens only once. This isn't a perfect scheme since dialup users typically don't hold an IP address for long, but for now it works OK - or at least better than no check at all!
Users can add lenses to the database via the "Add a Lens" link on the left. To minimize the possibility of abuse, this doesn't actually add the lens to the database, but it does format the data for entry and send it to the database administrator, who will check it before it is actually added. Users can report any data errors or other website problems via the "Report an Error" link on the left.
In addition there are a number of articles which can be reached via the menu links such as a lists of Weathersealed Lenses and ETTL II Compatible Lenses, a few comments on 3rd Party Lenses, an explanation of (and calculator for) Depth of Field, recomendations of where (and where NOT) to buy lenses and a list of free photo software.
For optimal viewing of this site you need a CSS compliant web browser, a display size of 800x600 or larger and you should have javascript enabled. All of these will be true for the vast majority of visitors.
