COMMENTS: The EF 500/4.5L was Canon's original 500mm lens and is optically similar to the earlier FD 500/4.5L. It's smaller, lighter and cheaper than the curent EF 500/4L IS USM and only 1/3 stop slower. However the loss of that 1/3 stop means that with most EOS bodies you don't get AF with a Canon 1.4x TC and no EOS body gives AF with a Canon 2x TC. The EF 500/4.5L USM is a very sharp lens, optically about as good as a 500mm lens gets, and the smaller size and weight make it a little easier to transport than the current EF 500/4.5L IS USM. Of course it lacks IS and that is a point against it, since IS can compensate somewhat for shake, even with the lens on a tripod.
