NOTES: EF-S 18-55/3.5-5.6 Review

COMMENTS:

This is the "kit" lens sold with the Digital Rebels, EOS 20D and EOS 30D. It's an EF-S mount lens so only fits on these APS-C sensor DSLRs.

There are actually 4 versions of this lens, a Mk I and a Mk II with each one being available in a USM or non-USM version. Only the USM versions are sold seperately in the US and only the non-USM versions are included in the "kit". You can sometimes find the non-USM version being sold as a "grey market import" or if it's beeen removed from a "kit".

Optically all four versions are identical and they are are all the same size and weight. The Mk I and Mk II versions differ only consmetically. The USM versions use a micro USM motor and have slighly faster and quiter AF.

The price of the non-USM lenses depends on the kit price, but is typically less than $100 more than the body alone, which makes it a bargain. While not optically great, it's nevertheless quite a usable lens, especially stopped down.
