COMMENTS: The Canon EF 28-80/2.8-4L USM is a little unusual in that it uses electronic manual focusing (i.e. the focus ring isn't mechanical but drives the focusing moter). Some of the older telephotos (e.g. 300/2.8L USM) also had this system but the 28-40/2.8-4L doesn't have full time manual focus, wheras the telephotos do. The USM focus is pretty fast and very quiet, though not as fast as current generation lenses like the Canon EF 24-70/2.8L USM. One point to note is that Canon may not be able to repair this lens if it suffers electronic problems, particularly wrt to USM focusing motor. It was discontinued so long ago that Canon may have no parts. Since the motor is also used in manual focus mode ("focus by wire"), if the USM motor fails, you don't have manual focus either. It's a very good, very sharp lens, though quite big and heavy (over 2 lbs). Some have commented that it shows more distortion and vignetting wide open than current similar models like the 24-70/2.8L and 28-70/2.8L USM
