NOTES: EF 18-55/3.5-5.6 Review

COMMENTS:

The standard "kit" lens with APS-C DSLRs is the 18-55/3.5-5.6 (non-USM version). A very useful focal length range, equal to 29-88mm in full frame terms. When purchased as part of a "kit" the price is often well under $100.

This lens is optically the same but has a micro USM motor (not a ring USM). This may be marginally faster focusing, but the difference between the USM and non-USM versions is small. Canon only sell the USM version as a seperate lens (the non-USM version is only available as part of a "kit").

A bit soft wide open but not too bad when stopped down. For the price (especially the non-USM version supplied as a kit lens for under $100) it's a bargain and it's the cheapest way to get a wideangle lens for the Canon APS-C DSLRs.

The Mk I and Mk II versions of this lens are optically identical, the differences between them are some small cosmetic changes.
