COMMENTS: This lens is widely regarded as being the best low-cost general purpose lens for EOS bodies (especially full frame bodies). It has a ring USM with full time manual focusing, a metal lens mount, a distance scale and optically it rates as quite good. It's definitely better than any of the low end, plastic lens mount, consumer zooms in the 28/35-80/105 range. There is a slower (and cheaper) 28-105 lens (f4-f5.6) which is inferior and should not be confused with this lens. On an APS-C DSLR it has the same field of view as a 45-170mm zoom would on a full frame camera. A useful range as long as you also have a lens that covers the wideangle end of things. The Mk II version of this lens is optically the same as the original version but cosmetically slightly different.
