COMMENTS:

One of Canon's unique DO (diffractive optics) lenses (the other is the EF 400/4 DO IS USM).

The use of diffractive optics makes the lens smaller and lighter than a lens using all conventional optics, but also adds to the price. Diffractive optics can also result in some optical artifcats, such as a "haze" around very bight objects when the lens is used wide open.

Otherwise it's a very sharp lens capable of excellent images and it's significantly smaller (when zoomed to 70mm) than it's major rival the EF 70-300/4-5.6IS USM.

The advantage of the EF 70-300/4-5.6IS USM is that it's less than half the price of the DO lens, while giving similar optical performance. However the DO lens is smaller and also has a ring USM with full time manual focus, which the non-DO lens lacks.
